  • Creates or extracts compressed archives.

ADDPATH

  • Adds or removes a dir to the path from the command line.

ALIAS

  • Sets a command alias to another command. For example ALIAS INFO DMI set INFO as DMI

APPEND

  • Sets the search path for data files. Similar to the PATH command but for data files instead of executable files.

ASSIGN

  • Redirects disk drive requests to a different drive. For example, ASSIGN A=B would make the system treat drive B: as if it were drive A:.

AWK

  • AWK is used to filter and manipulate output from other programs and functions.

BACKUP

  • Backs up one or more files from one disk to another. Typically used for data backup purposes.

BASENAME

  • The basename command reads the String parameter, deletes any prefix that ends with a / (slash) and any specified Suffix parameter, and writes the remaining base file name to standard output.

BASH

  • The bash command line interpreter.

BBOX

  • BBOX generates confirmation boxes from the command line.

BIN2C

  • Bin2C is a utility which takes a binary file as input and converts it to a C-array that can be directly included in target application code.

BM

  • Searches all files including binarys for a specific string recursively.

BUNZIP2

  • The BUNZIP2 command lets you compress and decompress the files i.e. it helps in binding the files into a single file which takes less storage space.

CHDIR (CD)

  • Displays the name of or changes the current directory.

CHKDSK

  • Checks a disk and displays a status report. It can also fix disk errors.

CHOICE

  • Allows batch files and scripts to prompt the user to select from a set of options.

CLS

  • Clears the screen.

COMMAND

  • Starts a new instance of the command interpreter.

COMP

  • Compares the contents of two files or sets of files, byte by byte.

COPY

  • Copies one or more files to another location.

CTTY

  • Changes the terminal device used to control your system.

DATE

  • Displays or sets the system date.

DEBUG

  • Runs Debug, a program testing and editing tool.

DEFRAG

  • Reorganizes the files on a disk to occupy contiguous spaces, improving efficiency and speed.

DEL (ERASE)

  • Deletes one or more files.

DELTREE

  • Deletes a directory and all the files and subdirectories within it.

DIR

  • Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory.

DISKCOMP

  • Compares the contents of two floppy disks.

DISKCOPY

  • Copies the entire contents of one floppy disk to another.

DOSKEY

  • Edits command lines, recalls DOS commands, and creates macros.

ECHO

  • Displays messages, or turns command echoing on or off.

EDIT

  • Starts MS-DOS Editor, a text editor used to create and edit ASCII text files.

EMM386

  • Enables or disables EMM386, the expanded memory manager.

EXE2BIN

  • Converts .EXE files to binary format.

EXIT

  • Exits the command interpreter or a batch script.

EXPAND

  • Expands a compressed file.

FASTOPEN

  • Decreases the amount of time needed to open frequently used files and directories.

FC

  • Compares two files or sets of files and displays the differences between them.

FDISK

  • Configures a hard disk for use by DOS. It creates, deletes, or changes the partitions.

FIND

  • Searches for a text string in a file or files.

FOR

  • Runs a specified command for each file in a set of files.

FORMAT

  • Formats a disk for use with DOS.

GOTO

  • Directs the batch file to jump to a labelled line.

GRAPHICS

  • Loads a program that enables the printing of graphics and text.

HELP

  • Provides help information for DOS commands.

IF

  • Performs conditional processing in batch programs.

LABEL

  • Creates, changes, or deletes the volume label of a disk.

LOADFIX

  • Loads a program above the first 64K of memory.

MEM

  • Displays the amount of used and free memory in the system.

MKDIR (MD)

  • Creates a new directory.

MODE

  • Configures system devices.

MORE

  • Displays output one screen at a time.

MOVE

  • Moves one or more files from one directory to another.

MSCDEX

SORT

  • Sorts input.

SUBST

  • Associates a path with a drive letter.

SYS

  • Copies the DOS system files and command interpreter to a disk.

TIME

  • Displays or sets the system time.

TREE

  • Graphically displays the directory structure of a drive or path.

TYPE

  • Displays the contents of a text file.

UNDELETE

  • Restores files that were previously deleted.

UNFORMAT

  • Restores a disk erased by the FORMAT command.

VER

  • Displays the DOS version number.

VERIFY

  • Tells DOS to verify that your files are written correctly to a disk.

VOL

  • Displays a disk volume label and serial number.

XCOPY

  • Copies files and directory trees. More powerful than the COPY command.
